Shawna's Weight Loss Surgery Journal
Post-Op Eating Tips

This is per, Dr. Barry Greene in Maryland.  Other surgeons have different restrictions and/or time in which to stick to such a strict diet.  I have seen many post-ops do this and have lost upwards of 50 to over 100 lbs in 3 to 4 months (dependent upon your pre-op weight).

First 2 weeks post-operative, Clear Liquids Only
water (at least 3 oz. every hour)
Beef or chicken broth
diluted Crystal Light (twice as much water as called for)
herbal teas with no sweetener
diluted apple juice (3 parts water to 1 part juice)
sugar free popsicles
sugar free jello
Veryfine Fruit2O
egg drop soup
clear protein drinks

Weeks 2-4, post-opertively:  Full Liquids
All of the above plus the following:
sugar free Carnation Instant Breakfast
protein shakes (chocolate and vanilla)
cottage cheese
sugar free yogurt
strained soups
Cream of Wheat/Rice

Weeks 4-6, post-operatively:  Soft Foods
All of the above plus the following:
mashed potatoes with melted cheese
(thinned out with a little chicken broth)
soups with soft vegetables
scrambled eggs with cheese
cooked fish
all cheeses
tuna
egg salad
soft cooked vegetables

Weeks 6 and on, post-operatively:  Low Carb
Eating after week 6 is on a low-carb trial basis.  Trial meaning that everyone is different and foods will react differently with each of us.

The dreaded "D" word - DUMPING.  How do you know your dumping?  EASY.  Signs and symptoms are nausea, cramping, vomiting, a clammy feeling, sweating, diarrhea and palpitations.

If a new food does make you dump, wait three to four days and try it again.  If that food continues to give you problems, you know you can't tolerate it.

If you continue to dump, vomit or feel nauseated after eating after week 9 and on, you may want to see your surgeon.  You may have some problems with your new pouch.
